Taylor's Awesome Book Reviews

Check out some of my reviews of some awesome books!

Congrats Self… Sigh.

I have now overloaded myself with e-copies that I want to read/review.  … What is considered an “overloaded” status? Like, 5, right?  No. I wish.

16 titles from netgalley (which means they have deadlines…)

56 titles from Kindle (I don’t think any of them have deadlines….)

This does not include the physical books that I have received from goodreads … nor does it include the couple of e-books that I received from the authors themselves.

It also does not include the other books that I own that I want to review either…

This was my face when I was trying to understand Faulkner. … It is also my face when I am trying to figure out what to do with all of these books…

Book Review: Fables, Vol. 1: Legends in Exile (Fables, #1)

FablesLegendsinExile

Fables, Vol. 1: Legends in Exile by Bill Willingham

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The classic characters such as Snow White and the big bad wolf all come together in this town called “Fables.” When different townspeople are found dead, it is up to some of children’s most loved characters to solve the crime.

This comic series puts a unique spin on fairy tale creatures. This might be an interesting project for students to branch off of – they could create new fairy tales or write their own sort of Fable town.

I love this book and I have enjoyed other books from this series. I think there’s a TV show called “Once Upon a Time” that does a similar thing as this comic book series, but I think students might enjoy reading these tales more than watching a show. That is my hope, at least.

What I Want To Add:

I have always been interested in comics.  However, I rarely ever really sat down with them.  Fables is one of the first comics that I really got into and I have loved every minute of it thus far.

With that being said, I have not had the time to reread a lot of comics and it has been a while since I really sat down with this series.  I do know that I enjoy the series.  I haven’t reread it due to a lack of wanting to, but due to a lack of time.  Hopefully I’ll be able to in the near future.

The volume is different from the rest of the series.  It sort of has its own story-line that does not connect with the rest of the series.  Sure, the characters are the same and whatnot, but this sort of just gets a general feel of the comics.  Think of it sort of as a pilot for a television show.

My absolute favorite character is “the big bad wolf.”  He is one of the central characters and I love that that means I get to read more about him.  I do not really remember why I like him so much, other than I love the whole vampire/werewolf thing.  … Though he’s not a werewolf technically but I think my mind made that connection nonetheless.

I would recommend this book for anyone in middle school and older.  I know some adults that absolutely love the series.  Given its age, I fear that not a lot of younger readers know about the series.  I hope to have a least one copy in my classroom to share with students.

My rating: 5/5 stars

Sincerely,

Taylor
